Compuware Brings the Power of Model-Driven Development to Eclipse

Compuware OptimalJ 4.1 Increases Development Team Productivity for Popular Open Source Platform

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EclipseCon 2006 -- Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR) today at EclipseCon 2006 announced its increased support for developing applications on the open-source Eclipse platform with version 4.1 of its OptimalJ Java development solution. Compuware, a Gold Sponsor of EclipseCon 2006, also announced its Tool Services Framework (Corona) project, which will enable greater collaboration across the application life cycle for Eclipse users.

"The open-source software (OSS) movement is having a positive effect on the IT software industry," said Mark Driver, Research Vice President of Gartner, Inc. in the report "Predicts 2006: The Effects of Open-Source Software on the IT Software Industry." "Its benefits are surfacing in numerous areas; however, its most-direct effect involves the capability to provide higher-quality software at lower costs."

Compuware's advanced Java development solution, OptimalJ, reduces the time, cost, risk and complexity of delivering and maintaining enterprise Java applications. The agile development capabilities immediately available in OptimalJ 4.1 empower IT teams to implement pragmatic model-driven development principles to rapidly deliver service-oriented and enterprise Java applications. Additionally, the pragmatic MDA principles supported in OptimalJ are among the most complete implementations of model-to-model and model-to-code transformations in the industry.

"DRC succeeds by combining domain expertise with rigorous process and innovative technology. We were facing a significant development challenge in creating a massive state government system with 167 use cases, 680 web pages and more than 400 data classes," said Kathy Perras, Vice President and General Manager, State and Local Programs, Dynamics Research Corp. "We needed a labor-saving and innovative approach that provided out-of-the-box productivity and quality. OptimalJ was that solution."

With the addition of these new capabilities, OptimalJ 4.1 now includes:

* Professional Edition Built on Eclipse -- In addition to its native NetBeans implementation, OptimalJ 4.1 Professional Edition now brings the productivity of model driven development for building high-value, business- driven enterprise applications to the Eclipse platform. Developers model and manipulate diagrams, views and source code all from Eclipse perspectives of the business.

* UML Improvements -- OptimalJ 4.1 adds award-winning UML modeling capabilities, incorporating MagicDraw UML from No Magic, Inc. The entire development team can now quickly visualize designs as UML 2.0 diagrams in just a few easy steps. Class and Use Cases can be imported directly to the OptimalJ domain models for application architecture and code generation.

* Improved traceability -- OptimalJ 4.1 introduces the Use Case model to the Domain Model workspace. This provides easier synchronization between requirements, design models and code, which creates traceability throughout the application life cycle and enables development teams to effectively evaluate the impact of changes to the application and manage the change process.

"By bringing the power of model-driven development to the Eclipse platform, Compuware is helping to dramatically increase development team productivity," said Mike Sawicki, OptimalJ Product Manager, Compuware Corporation. "Compuware OptimalJ 4.1 reduces the cost and accelerates the development of J2EE enterprise applications."
